# Run a first desktop-new-tab example

Start with the smallest workflow described by the README for **desktop-new-tab**. Complete [installation and configuration](/docs/up-to-code-desktop-new-tab/installation-guide) first.

## Try the installed extension

Build and load `dist` using the installation guide, then open a new Chrome tab. Right-click the desktop to add a folder, site, or widget. Drag a URL into a folder, open it again, and confirm that its contents remain after opening another new tab. Changes are stored locally; the README describes no account or server.

A Vite preview does not replace Chrome’s New Tab page. After changing extension source, rebuild and reload the extension card in Chrome.

## Next task

[Read the usage guide](/docs/up-to-code-desktop-new-tab/usage-guide).
